Warehouse working hours and overtime in the UAE
A phrase such as “12-hour shift” does not tell you which hours are ordinary time, which hours may be overtime, or when the weekly rest day falls. This guide shows how to read a warehouse rota, how overtime can enter a pay calculation, and what to check on an offer and a payslip. It is information, not legal advice. Current advertised warehouse roles on this site use 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, and basic pay from AED 2,200 to AED 2,500 plus eligible overtime. Overtime is not guaranteed income. Formula version UAE_OT_2026_09 is illustrative only. Last reviewed 4 September 2026.

Start with four terms
If you mix these four words, every later number will look larger or smaller than it is. Learn them first. Then read the rota.
| Term | Simple meaning | Illustrative check |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled hours | The ordinary working time the employer plans for that day or week | The current vacancy lists 8 hours a day |
| Break | A pause that may or may not count as working time | Ask whether the meal pause is paid |
| Overtime | Extra hours beyond ordinary working time, if they are eligible and approved | Not the same as “I stayed late” |
| Rest day | The weekly day you are not scheduled to work | The current vacancy lists 1 weekly day off |
Scheduled hours are the plan. Overtime is extra, and only if the contract and the public rule treat those hours that way. A long clock-in is not automatically overtime. A rest day is not a public holiday unless the papers say so.
What the current public rule says
This section restates public guidance linked to Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations and MOHRE public materials, reviewed 4 September 2026. It is not a legal opinion and not a substitute for the official text. Confirm the latest wording on https://www.mohre.gov.ae/ before you rely on a figure.
In public summaries, ordinary working time is often described as 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week. Some activities can use a different daily limit. This page does not decide which limit applies to every warehouse. The current advertised roles on this site state 8 hours a day and 6 days a week.
- Extra hours may be payable as overtime when they are eligible under the law, the contract, and the approval process.
- Public guidance commonly describes ordinary overtime as the wage plus at least 25 percent (multiplier 1.25 in formula UAE_OT_2026_09).
- Public guidance commonly describes overtime at night, often referred to as 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, as the wage plus at least 50 percent (multiplier 1.50). Confirm the official night window.
- Work on the weekly rest day is often described as another rest day or pay with at least 50 percent extra (multiplier 1.50 in the same formula). Confirm how your contract treats the rest day.
- Daily overtime limits and exceptions exist. Shift systems and special cases can change how a rule applies. Do not treat a blog post as the rule.
Ramadan and other official periods can change working hours. Emirate, sector, and contract type can also change the detail. If HR and the official page disagree, keep both in writing and ask which text they are using.
How to read a shift schedule
A useful rota names start time, end time, break, workdays, rest day, and the worksite. A screenshot that only says “day shift” is not enough. Ask where you report: Dubai South, Jebel Ali, or another written location.
| Illustrative week | Clock window | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Six workdays | 08:00 to 17:00 with a 1-hour pause | Ask which 8 hours are working time and whether the pause is paid |
| Weekly rest day | No scheduled warehouse shift | Confirm which weekday this is, and whether it can move |
| Longer window | 07:00 to 19:00 | Do not assume all 12 hours are overtime. Split ordinary, break, and extra. |
| Transport | Company bus before and after the shift | Ask if waiting or travel time is working time. Often it is not, unless written. |
The current vacancy includes employer transport between housing and the warehouse. That bus can decide whether an early start is realistic. It does not, by itself, add overtime. Location notes are in /guides/warehouse-jobs-jebel-ali-dubai-south/.
How overtime enters the pay calculation
Cash pay on this site is described as basic salary plus eligible paid overtime minus any authorised deductions. Housing and work transport have value, but they are not extra cash in your hand. Three daily meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are included on the current vacancy.
Formula version UAE_OT_2026_09 is an illustration used by the tools on this site. It is not a payslip and not an official MOHRE calculator.
- Start with the monthly basic salary in the written offer.
- Illustrative hourly rate = basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8.
- Ordinary overtime amount = hourly rate × 1.25 × approved ordinary overtime hours.
- Night or rest-day overtime amount = hourly rate × 1.50 × approved hours in that category.
- Add only hours that were worked and approved in the category the site uses.
The “30 days and 8 hours” basis is a simple teaching split. Your contract or payroll method may use another basis. If the payslip hourly rate does not match this illustration, the payslip and the official rule win.
Three illustrative examples
All three examples use AED 2,200 basic, formula UAE_OT_2026_09, and the 4 September 2026 indicative rate of 1 AED about 22.90 INR. Hours are invented for teaching. They are not a forecast of your month.
Illustrative hourly rate: 2,200 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = about AED 9.17.
| Example | Approved hours | Illustrative extra cash | About in INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary overtime | 16 hours × 1.25 | About AED 183 | About 4,190 INR before transfer fees |
| Night overtime | 8 hours × 1.50 | AED 110 | About 2,520 INR before transfer fees |
| Rest-day work | 8 hours × 1.50 | AED 110 | About 2,520 INR before transfer fees |
Night and rest-day lines use the same 1.50 multiplier in this formula. They are still different categories on a payslip. Do not merge them when you check the month. If both happen, they are added only if both sets of hours were worked and approved.
Why overtime is not guaranteed income
Eligible overtime pay is for hours that exist, are allowed, and are approved. A busy week can add hours. A quiet week can add none. Season, volume, attendance, and the written terms all change the total.
- The site may not need extra hours every month.
- A supervisor may not approve hours that were not requested.
- Absence or late arrival can remove you from extra-hour lists.
- Daily or weekly limits in the public rule can cap extra hours.
- A verbal “lots of OT” is not a monthly figure you can send home.
Budget from basic pay, housing, transport, and three daily meals. Treat overtime as a possible extra. The current vacancy includes accommodation, work transport, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Use /tools/dubai-warehouse-worker-savings-calculator/ with overtime set to zero first.
Breaks, tiredness and safety
Long hours raise simple safety risks: missed labels, blocked aisles, and late reports. This page does not give medical advice and does not diagnose fatigue. It asks you to treat rest and reporting as part of the job.
- Ask when meal breaks fall. Three daily meals are included on the current vacancy; confirm where they are served.
- Ask how the site wants you to report a spill, a damaged carton, or a need to stop.
- Do not accept a private shortcut that skips a count because the shift is long.
- Practise safer choices in /tools/warehouse-safety-quiz/ . The quiz is not a site certificate.
If a rota regularly shows a 12-hour window, ask how rest days, handovers, and transport home work after a late finish. A company bus that leaves before your extra hours end is a practical problem, not a small detail.
What should appear in the offer or contract
Before you treat hours as known, look for these fields on the written offer or employment contract. Use /tools/uae-employment-contract-checker/ as a field list. The tool is not a legal review.
- Daily scheduled hours and weekly workdays.
- Weekly rest day, and whether it can move.
- Worksite: Dubai South, Jebel Ali, or another written place.
- How overtime is requested, approved, and paid.
- Whether night hours and rest-day hours have a different rate.
- Break timing and whether the break is paid.
- Housing and work-transport terms, because they change how a shift is livable.
How to check a payslip
A payslip is a month story. Read it as four columns even if the paper uses other names: hours, category, rate, amount.
- Find basic salary and confirm it matches the written monthly basic.
- Find overtime lines. Each line should have hours and a category: ordinary, night, rest day, or the site name for that type.
- Multiply on paper: illustrative hourly × multiplier × hours. If the slip is far from that illustration, ask payroll which basis they use.
- Check deductions. Ask for the legal name and the amount of each deduction.
- Keep the slip. A photo in your own phone is useful if a later question appears.
If hours you worked do not appear, ask for the timesheet or scanner log that payroll used. If hours appear that you did not work, ask for a correction before you spend the extra. Silence is harder to fix later.
Questions to ask HR
Short questions reduce polite confusion. Ask them in writing so the answer can be compared with the offer.
- What are the scheduled start, end, and break times for this role?
- Which weekday is the weekly rest day, and can it change?
- Is a 12-hour window ever used, and how are those hours split into ordinary time and overtime?
- Who approves overtime, and when do I see that approval?
- Which hours count as night hours on this site?
- How is rest-day work paid or replaced with another rest day?
- Does the company bus cover late finishes?
- Are meals provided? The current vacancy includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Confirm the written offer keeps them.
- Which deductions can appear on the first payslip?
- Can I see a sample payslip layout with the line names you use?
Use the overtime calculator
Enter a basic salary and the hours you want to test in /tools/uae-warehouse-overtime-calculator/ . The tool uses formula UAE_OT_2026_09: hourly = basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8, ordinary 1.25, night and rest day 1.50. The result is an illustration, not a promised payment.
Then place the same basic in /guides/warehouse-worker-salary-dubai/ and a conservative month in /tools/dubai-warehouse-worker-savings-calculator/ with overtime at zero. If the role still looks suitable, read /#offer and compare every hour line with the written offer.

Frequently asked questions
Is overtime guaranteed in warehouse jobs?
No. Overtime depends on site need, approval, attendance, and the written terms. Current advertised roles on this site include eligible paid overtime when extra hours are worked and approved. That is not a fixed monthly bonus. Budget from basic pay first.
Is a 12-hour shift fully paid as overtime?
No. A 12-hour window is not automatically 12 overtime hours. You first identify scheduled ordinary hours, then breaks, then any extra hours that are approved as overtime. Ask HR to write that split before you treat the extra clock time as extra pay.
How is night overtime calculated?
This site illustration (UAE_OT_2026_09) uses basic ÷ 30 ÷ 8, then multiplies approved night hours by 1.50. Public MOHRE guidance linked to Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 commonly describes a night window around 10:00 pm to 4:00 am and a 50 percent addition. Confirm the official text and your contract. This is not legal advice.
Can shift patterns change?
They can, if the contract or site policy allows a change and you are told in the way those papers require. Ask which weekday is the rest day, whether nights rotate, and how much notice you get. A verbal “we will see after you arrive” is not a finished answer.
What should I check on my payslip?
Check that basic salary matches the offer, that overtime hours have a category and a rate, that the amount is close to an honest calculation, and that every deduction has a name. Keep a copy. Ask payroll in writing if hours you worked are missing.
Ready to take a calm next step?
If the role still looks suitable, you can submit an application. A written offer, not this guide, confirms pay and benefits.
